Deadline Approaches to Apply for Congressional Nominations to U.S. Service Academies

U.S. Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-11) announced this year’s deadline for students wishing to apply for one of the nation’s service academies is Friday, Oct. 16. This includes applications to the U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Military Academy, U.S. Coast Guard Academy and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

In addition to applying to the individual service academy a student must receive a nomination by a qualified nominating source. The deadline to apply for a congressional nomination from Congressman Connolly is Friday, Oct. 16, 2015. Any student who lives in the 11th District of Virginia must submit a completed application packet by the deadline in order to be considered. There are no exceptions to this deadline.

Students who submit completed application packages will be interviewed by one of the Academy Advisory Boards. These boards comprise academy graduates, active duty or retired officers and even a former academy admissions officer. The boards will then make their recommendations to Congressman Connolly for his approval.

The Nomination Application and Information packets are available on Connolly’s website at: http://connolly.house.gov/academy-nominations/. Interested students and their parents may also contact his Annandale District Office at 703-256-3071 for additional information.

Empty Bowls Event to be Held in Springfield

This fall, the Capital Area Food Bank will host three Empty Bowls events in a neighborhood near you. As an increasing amount of our neighbors across Washington, Maryland and Northern Virginia struggle to access the healthy food they need, we will fill even more bowls this year through your support at three lunches on three different dates. In preparation for the CAFB’s Empty Bowls tour: Artists are creating one-of-a-kind, handcrafted bowls; local chefs are planning their recipes for a special soup; and bakers will provide hearty, freshly baked bread.

For $35, you’ll receive a unique artisan bowl, delicious hot soup from the trendiest area restaurants and the warm feeling of helping nourish our community – one bowl at a time.

All proceeds go to the Capital Area Food Bank – the largest hunger relief organization serving the Washington Metro area – and will provide food to almost 500 food assistance partner nonprofits who access food from the CAFB to serve people in their neighborhoods.

Empty Bowls Virginia event will be held at Hilton Hotel - Springfield, 6550 Loisdale Rd., on Thursday, Oct. 29, 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. To sign up or donate, visit http://www.capitalareafoodbank.org/give/donate-food/.
