Bike Lanes on Southrun Road

Fairfax County Department of Transportation will host a community meeting to discuss proposed bike lanes on Southrun Road on Thursday, May 12, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., at Laurel Hill Elementary School, 8390 Laurel Crest Drive, Lorton. Representatives from FCDOT and Virginia Department of Transportation will talk about the plans for the project, which addresses not only bike lanes, but also traffic impacts and safety issues. Destination Smile to Hold Caring for Kids Day

The doctors and staff at Destination Smile Pediatric Dental Office in Lorton will host Caring for Kids Day, May 14 from 8 a.m. to noon. As part of their monthly Passport to Philanthropy program, they offer full dental appointments for children without medical insurance one day each year. Visits include a triage appointment, cleaning, treatment and prognosis for parent/guardian consideration.

This year is fifth year of Caring for Kids Day and Destination Smile will be partnering with the Department of Child Services, Fairfax County Public School Systems, Lorton Community Action Center,, United Community Ministries, and Carpenter’s Shelter to schedule appointments for the children with highest need.

They are expecting between 35 and 40 children to be served this year at the cost of $7,000 to $15,000 for the office.

Foster Walk to Be Held on May 14

As National Foster Care Awareness Month approaches in May, Foster Care Alumni of America (FCAA) and its partners are organizing awareness-raising events across the country to urge community members to get involved. St. George’s to Host Barbecue and Car Wash

St. George’s United Methodist Church is hosting its 13th Annual Barbecue and Car Wash on Saturday, May 7. The car wash begins at 9 a.m. in the church’s main parking lot. The pig pull or chicken barbecue will begin at 11 a.m. and will be served on the church deck. Proceeds go to support caring for the hungry and homeless in Fairfax County and repairing homes in the Appalachian region of North Carolina.
